Services from Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Vocational Training

  1. Students can obtain a waiver of government tax, including departure tax on the cost of their ticket when leaving St. Lucia to attend school overseas. This service is NOT applicable for students attending graduation ceremonies.
  2. The Book Bursary Programme was established by the Government of Saint Lucia in 2002 for children who attend infant and primary schools. This public assistance programme was initiated specifically to assist parents and guardians of children who are unemployed, needy or otherwise challenged.  It provides textbooks related to all the core subjects that are being taught at the primary school. The book distribution aspect of the programme runs for at least five weeks during the summer at the St. Aloysius R.C. Boys’ Primary School.

  3. The department offers various courses throughout the year. Upon the successful completion of a course, learners will be awarded Certificates of Achievement endorsed by the Ministry. To be eligible for certification, learners must attend 60% classes and must perform satisfactorily in the end of cycle examination as well as course work/projects. A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to persons who do not write the final examination or perform unsatisfactorily at the examination.The following types of courses are offered by the department:
    1. Technical Courses
      These courses are offered in two cycles - Cycle 1: Sept/OCt - Jan; Cycle 2: Feb - June. There are three levels of courses: (a) Basic courses - 50 hrs; (b) Intermediate courses - 50 hrs; (c) Advanced courses - 50 hrs.

    2. Academic Courses
      These courses are offered in two semesters - Sept to Jan; Feb to June. The following courses are offered per semester:
      a.   Basic Literacy and Numeracy - 50 hrs
      b.   Pre CXC & CXC English and Mathematics - semester

  4. Primarily provided for: Teachers and Principals, Administrative Staff, and Ancillary Staff
  5. (Students to be placed at Secondary Schools)
  6. Provided as a service to Teachers and Principals, Administrative Staff, and Ancillary Staff
  7. The Ministry of Education through the Research Officer provides support to students/persons conducting research in education. This suppor t involves access to available relevant documentation/literature, consultation on the research process and topics outlined in the Ministry’s Research Agenda.
  8. The School Feeding Programme is a social assistance programme that is provided by the Ministry of Education at infant and primary schools.  This programme provides a hot nutritious meal for children at lunch time.
