THE LECTURE WILL BE DELIVERED BY DR. LORD ABBEY, PROFESSOR OF AMENITY HORTICULTURE AT DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY.
The Department of Agri-Entrepreneurship and Climate Smart Agriculture at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College will host a lecture delivered by Dr. Lord Abbey, Associate Professor, Amenity Horticulture, Department of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University, Canada. The Lecture will take place on Wednesday 13th November 2024 at 12:30 p.m. in Innovation Hub Room 2 at the College’s Campus. The title of the lecture is “The Urgency of a Resilient Agricultural System in the face of Climate Change.”
The lecture will explore the following:
- Saint Lucia's high food and animal feed import bill
- Food security is threatened if we remain so dependent on imports
- What are the agronomic practices that are sustainable - water, compost, spill, crop - types/varieties
- How can we see opportunities within this climate?
- Advantage of locally grown food products
- Marketing opportunities - niche, tourism, exports
- Disadvantages of imported foods - Foreign exchange, provenance, chemicals/ hormones
- How can the audience play a part - small scale horticulture
