THE 10-WEEK PROGRAMME AIMS TO FOSTER PUBLIC TRUST, AND MINIMIZE THE RISK OF MISCOMMUNICATION.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) hosted a closing ceremony on
August 15, for a Spanish Language Course, marking an important step in
enhancing the skills and capabilities of its officers.
Thirty-four officers completed the 10-week A-1 level programme, delivered at the Police Force Academy and facilitated by the Embassy of Mexico through Spanish instructor Mrs. Francis Baeza. The course was designed to equip officers with essential vocabulary and conversational skills to effectively engage Spanish-speaking individuals in their line of duty. The ability to communicate in Spanish is expected to foster public trust and minimize the risk of miscommunication in the execution of their duties.
This initiative reflects the vision of Commissioner of Police Verne Garde, who has championed the importance of officers acquiring proficiency in a second language to strengthen community engagement, regional cooperation, and develop future interpreters within the Force. French and Mandarin courses are currently underway, with an Arabic programme expected to be introduced soon.
By investing in language training, the RSLPF is strengthening its ties with diverse communities and enhancing public safety. The Force extends sincere appreciation to the Embassy of Mexico for its invaluable contribution to this programme, a testament to the importance of international cooperation in building law enforcement capacity and ensuring a safer Saint Lucia for all.
