EVERY YEAR ON NOVEMBER 20TH, THE WORLD CELEBRATE UNIVERSAL CHILDREN'S DAY

In recognition of this year’s observance of Universal Children’s Day, the Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology, and Vocational Training, through its Early Childhood Services Unit, will host an Early Childhood Extravaganza on the Derek Walcott Square on Wednesday, November 20th, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The theme of the activity is "Investing in our Children and Ensuring Inclusion for Every Child."

The Early Childhood Extravaganza will commence with a formal opening ceremony, followed by a variety of performances by children from various early childhood centers on the island, as well as students from the special education centers. The activity provides an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the unique qualities, abilities, and talents of the nation’s children. Arthur Allain and Ezra "De Fun Machine" will make special guest appearances. Approximately 700 children accompanied by their teachers will be in attendance.

Every year on November 20th, the world celebrate Universal Children's Day, marking the anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.The day serves to remind society of its obligation and responsibility to protect and nurture children’s innocence and potential, with a focus on education, nutrition, and the provision of a secure environment; children’s rights are human rights and are non-negotiable.

This aims to ensure that all children receive the rights they deserve, thereby paving the way for their responsible adulthood. The focus is to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of unity and commitment regarding the safety, upbringing, and quality of life for all children in Saint Lucia, regardless of their age, gender, social-economic status, abilities, and competencies. Investing in our children today secures a better future for them and our nation.

Saint Lucia became a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on 16th July 1993. The CRC document addresses the unique needs and rights of children, binding all ratifying nations to international law and requiring them to act in the child's best interests. November 20th, 2024, marks the 35th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
